I’ve come to the course with a number of ideas for pieces, as I said in chapter 2. The table top piece I had in mind is really based on some experiences of being a parent to young children. Mealtimes with 3 people between 2 and 6 were quite challenging. The artwork I was making at the time was really about bringing things under my control in some way. In this spirit, my initial was to make a full size lace tablecloth but with lots of objects that often remained on the table during mealtimes. The kitchen table is always about more than just food. I spend more time away outside of the interior of my home and I’m much more stimulated by architecture than household things so the tablecloth idea has grown and changed to incorporate maps and 3d buildings. Like the “Game of Life” board game.
I think the theme of social isolation is still very relevant to the research I’m doing now. My fine art practice is very much about the contemporary ideation of motherhood and also the Utopian ideas of modernist architecture and the resulting isolation of both. So, I would like this work to acknowledge that. But.. I would like to avoid anything too autobiographical at this point.
I would also like to make something which will give me an opportunity to experiment with materials and techniques.
